Components of Academy Curriculum
- Creative Drama: Using theater games to encourage the development of the imagination, to enact, and reflect
upon improvised situations.
- Acting Technique: Using Stanslavski and Strasberg "Method Acting" techniques, actors use the 7 steps to
building a character; learn to make choices; discover inner actions, physical actions, subtext, emotions, perceptions, and
motivations.
- Creative Movement: Use of movement techniques - including mime, dance, circus and stage combat - enhances
control, agility, stage presence, body awareness. Movement techniques based on Grotowski method.
- Voice and Speech: Use of "Arthur Lessac* vocal techniques increasing relaxation, resonance, articulation,
and projection.
- Improvisation: Use of character and scene improvisational exercises develops expressiveness, spontaneity,
effective partnering and honesty.
- Play Study: Students explore text, character, relationships and blocking in scripts.
- Classical Scene Study: Students explore text, character and styles in scenes and monologues from
Shakespeare.
- Musical Theater: Use of singing and dance techniques increases actor versatility, enhances stage presence
and broadens familiarity with style.
- Design: Students will gain hands on knowledge of what goes into being a theatrical designer, while
designing costumes and scenery.
- Playwriting: Learn the early process of expressing theme, character and plot through dramatic
writing.
- The Theater Ensemble: The Academy will be auditioning in the near future 5th through high school age
students to participate in our advanced pre-professional theater training program. Members chosen for the company must have
participated in a minimum of two academy sessions.
